LaGrand fights for public safety

For nearly a month, I have received full-page campaign literature several times each week form the Michigan Republican Party trashing David LaGrand in his bid for a seat in the state Senate. Initially, it was amused to read the wildly distorted adaptations of the truth, but my amusement has steadily evolved into irritation with this slime-slinging approach to local politics. The barrage of deliberately misleading negative mail is an insult to the intelligence of the voters.
The final insult, however, is for the Republicans to assign blame for painful cuts made to our city’s public safety budget –due to drastic cuts in Lansing that Dave Hildenbrand voted for! Hildenbrand hasn’t supported adequate revenue sharing that pays for our city’s police and firefighters and essential services such as garbage pickup and road repair and has also failed to support adequate funding for our city’s schools.
While he was a city commissioner, David LaGrand worked endlessly to keep Grand Rapids afloat – especially for our public safety – and he had to because Dave Hildenbrand voted our money away.
I hope that voters will be wise enough to see through the Republican misinformation and vote for David LaGrand on Nov. 2.
