Grand Rapids, Mich. August 4, 2010- Yesterday, David LaGrand won the democratic primary in the 29th District State Senate race defeating State Representative Robert Dean. LaGrand, a local small business owner, former City Commissioner and former Assistant Kent County Prosecutor faces off with State Rep. Dave Hildenbrand in the general election.
LaGrand is energized by the results. He said, “I am deeply humbled and grateful to the people of the 29th District for supporting my candidacy for state senate. I look forward to talking with voters throughout the district over the next 3 months. This election has solidified my belief that the residents of the 29th District want leaders with real job creation experience. The work is just beginning, and I am eager to spread my message of fixing the mess in Lansing, attracting good paying jobs to the area and protecting our schools and cities.”
LaGrand also said that this victory would not have been possible without the support of his community. “I am incredibly honored by the amazing support and encouragement I have received. This victory was made possible by the wonderful volunteers that believed in my message and gave of their time. To my family and friends, this victory is yours and together we can build a Michigan that works for us all.”
David LaGrand worked as an Assistant Kent County Prosecutor, formed several private law practices, created two successful small businesses, including the Wealthy Street Bakery, and was elected to the Grand Rapids City Commission in 2007. David is a member of Eastern Avenue Christian Reformed Church and lives with his wife Melissa and their four children.

On Aug. 3, vote David LaGrand in the Democratic primary for the 29th District Senate seat. He has been endorsed by public safety associations and has worked with law enforcement as assistant Kent County prosecutor.
As a former city commissioner, David is knowledgeable about our city. When safety cuts were threatened by the ongoing budget crisis, David sought citizen input through town hall meetings. He also worked to build consensus among his peers, knowing that compromise is reached through regular communication and the refusal to accept a stalemate.
David’s willingness to listen is an important quality at a time when our senators on both sides of the aisle have shown an inability to talk, listen and get things done. David is a small-business owner and has a comprehensive economic plan that includes a pro-business tax code. He understands how important it is to protect and encourage the growth of businesses.
As a father, David has his eye on Michigan’s future. He knows it is essential to initiate job growth so that his children and ours will have the choice to stay in Michigan to raise their families. Vote LaGrand on Aug. 3.

I first met David LaGrand at his bakery on Wealthy Street in 2007. He so impressed me then that I agreed to be part of his campaign for Grand Rapids City Commission. I continue to be impressed by David’s commitment to his faith, his family, and the community. David is the type of person the 29th District needs in the Senate.
David combines a firm set of values and priorities with the pragmatism that comes from running a successful small business. Never content to only see his own efforts succeed, he has had experience working with multiple stakeholders to help revitalize entire neighborhoods in Grand Rapids, including my own. Vote for David LaGrand on Aug. 3.
